Wereldmilieudag: hoe we onze producten duurzamer maken

World Environment Day: How we are making our products more sustainable

OPPO has published its 2022 Sustainability Report today, on World Environment Day. We have always been mindful of how to minimize our impact on the environment, but in 2020, sustainability was explicitly included in our corporate strategy. Since then, an annual sustainability report has been released to showcase the progress we have made.

In 2022, OPPO completed its first global CO2 emission inventory. Based on this data, a carbon reduction roadmap was developed, and in February of this year, we announced our goal to become carbon neutral by 2050. By the end of 2022, we had already reduced our annual emissions by 6,000 tons. This is equivalent to the amount of greenhouse gas absorbed by 3,330 square kilometers of forest in a year.

OPPO's carbon reduction roadmap

In addition to important initiatives to green our operations and production, you will also notice our commitment to sustainability in the OPPO products you hold as a consumer.

Sustainable Packaging

Green and carbon-reduced principles form the basis for the design and selection of materials for our packaging. We follow the internationally recognized 3R1D principle, which stands for “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Degradable.”

When selecting materials, we choose products with minimal environmental impact. For example, we use eco-friendly ink based on soybeans for printing packaging materials, and in Europe, about 45% of our smartphone packaging is made from recycled fibers, such as cuttings from sugarcane and bamboo, while plastic use has been reduced by 95%. We have set a goal to achieve 100% biodegradable packaging by this year.

Longer Smartphone Lifespan

We aim to deliver products that last. Every product leaving our factory has undergone rigorous sustainability tests to ensure that the quality and reliability of our smartphones are guaranteed over the long term.

With the OPPO Reno8 T, we also introduced our 48-month Fluency Protection. Software and hardware were optimized based on thorough lab tests that simulated the phone's performance after four years of continuous use. The result? Your phone will start, perform, and run your favorite apps as if it were brand new, even after years of use.

Since 2023, we offer up to 5 years of security updates and up to 4 major Android upgrades for selected smartphones. This indirectly reduces the overall environmental impact because users can continue using their current smartphone for longer while still benefiting from a secure and up-to-date software experience.

Product Lifecycle Management

A Longer Lasting Battery

To relieve users and contribute to a more sustainable future, OPPO developed the Battery Health Engine, which was first introduced in the OPPO Find X5 Pro.

The Battery Health Engine prevents inactive lithium from forming in the battery, keeping the battery capacity at a healthy level for longer. As a result, we have managed to keep the battery capacity above 80% even after 1600 charging cycles, compared to an industry standard of 800 charging cycles. 1600 charging cycles equals about four years of actual use.

Fighting E-Waste

At the end of a product's life cycle, it is important to avoid it ending up in the growing pile of e-waste. We take our responsibility seriously in this area as well. In 2022, 1.08 million phones were recycled in China, totaling 195 tons. In the European Union, OPPO is involved in the Green Dot program and collaborates with professional recycling companies to help recycle used products.

Sustainability Report

For OPPO, sustainability is not just a word for World Environment Day, but a long-term commitment. We believe that technology can create value for both people and the planet, and we take our responsibility to contribute to a more sustainable future.
